That’s my World

 

Good news – the libraries have been given a reprieve. For once all the protesting has been worth it and the council are now going to decide other alternatives.  Not sure what that means it may be reduced hours which will be better than closing.

Nine libraries in Somerset that were threatened with closure could be saved under new proposals.

Twenty of the county council's 34 libraries were earmarked for closure. The plans were changed following a series of consultations.

In a new proposal nine - Glastonbury, Cheddar, Ilminster, Martock, Somerton, Shepton Mallet, Dulverton, Castle Cary and Wiveliscombe - could be retained.

However, six libraries could still be closed in the current year. Those at risk of closure in the next year are Porlock, Highbridge, Watchet, Sunningdale, Bishops Lydeard and Bruton. Under the plans, they would be offered to the community to run.  Eleven would lose their funding and a remaining five libraries - South Petherton, North Petherton, Nether Stowey, Milborne Port and Priorswood - would have until next year to find alternative funding, or face closure.  Source: BBC news

This weekend was the Big Garden Birdwatch organised by the RSPB. To take part people are asked to record the number and type of birds visiting for one hour.  Compared with the number of birds that do visit my garden my count was very low.  It was a very cold day which probably had a bearing on the numbers.

My results were:

• Starlings – 6
• Sparrows – 4
• Wood Pigeon – 3
• Chaffinch – 1
• Blackbird- 1

I am not too worried as I usually get many more and different birds such as robin, blue tits and goldfinch.

ABC Wednesday

I am giving myself a challenge to post photographs of places during  Round 8.

This week we visit Burnham on Sea, famous for it’s short pier and lighthouse.

Burnham-on-Sea has all the charm of a traditional seaside resort with its own distinct character.  It is famous for its unique nine-legged wooden lighthouse and also boasts one of the shortest piers in the country.

Plenty of fun can be had on the miles of sandy beaches, donkey rides for the youngsters, sandcastle building, or just unwinding with an ice cream and the views of Bridgwater Bay and the Welsh coast in front of you.

There is a busy town centre with a mix of high street shops and a range of more traditional outlets. To the south of Burnham lies Apex Park, which offers visitors a chance to stroll around the lakes, enjoy the wildlife or something more active. The park offers fishing, BMX biking areas, a skate park, a trim trail and a play area for children. As well as guesthouses and self-catering cottages in and around the town, the area has a variety of campsites and holiday parks.

That’s My World

Somerset County Council is planning to close 20 libraries and cut back on mobile libraries that travel to rural areas due to cut backs of £1.4 m in the library budget from Central Government.  This move is also happening in other parts of the UK with a total of 375 libraries under threat.   It will leave towns such as Glastonbury, Shepton Mallet, Highbridge, Cheddar, Ilminster and Martock without a library.  Their argument is that there are larger libraries in towns nearby, in my opinion closing libraries in these towns will seriously affect the elderly and less able people in those towns.  Libraries are not just about books they are also used for Internet facilities such as research, job hunting and house hunting.

I am saddened that they are thinking about taking away such a wonderful resource in the community. I visit the library nearly every week and often go during my lunch hour to read magazines and newspapers.

ABC Wednesday is just starting a new round and I am going join in again. I stopped before due to time restraints, things have not changed greatly in my life I am still working and my job is still stressful job so I  hope I will be able to keep up.

That's My World

This squirrel is eating a nut he has taken from a squirrel proof bird feeder!  Maybe it should be sent to the manufacturers of the bird feeder.  It was quite difficult to take as I was hiding behind a curtain and taking the photo through glass. That’s my World

After a rainy day when driving home from work last week the clouds parted and I noticed the mist starting to form across the fields. I decided to stop and take some photographs, it was not easy as it was getting dark.  I balanced the camera on a gate to keep it still as it needed a fairly long exposure.

The High Street

Last night was the last episode of Turn Back Time - The High Street, bringing the series up to the 1970s, due to working commitments I was unable to take any photographs of that era. I also missed the Jubilee party which had to be held indoors due to the rainy weather.  It was really interesting that the shopkeepers from Sergions were bored as the shop had turned into a supermarket, they missed the day to day contact with people and the customers missed the personal contact. I liked the record shop which took me back to my youth.  It was a very enjoyable series, a book has been written on shopping in Britain during the past 100 years, I hope to get the book.
